Homemade Pizza
Some consider pizza to be the perfect food. It's a quick weeknight dinner that can easily translate to parties and get-togethers. The endless combination of options makes it easy to pair with wine as well! The dough recipe below comes together quickly (most of the time is spent leaving it to rise) but our pairing ideas can be accomplished with store-bought dough or a phone call to your favorite local pizza place.
This recipe makes two medium sized pizzas but can be divided as you wish.
PIZZA DOUGH
Ingredients:

1 1/2 c warm water

2 1/4 t active-dry yeast

1 t sugar

1 t salt

2 T Olive Oil
-
3 ½ cups whole wheat or white flour

Cornmeal for dusting
Directions:
Combine warm, but not hot, water with sugar and yeast in your mixing bowl. Allow several minutes to give your yeast a head start before adding 3 cups of flour, olive oil, and salt. The amount of flour you need will vary so continue adding as you knead until the dough easily forms a ball. Continue kneading for 3-4 minutes or until your dough forms a smooth but springy ball. Place it somewhere warm to rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size. Divide in two and form each portion into balls, allow to rest 10 minutes before rolling flat.
When ready to cook, preheat oven to 475F. Optionally, use a pizza stone or bake in a wood-fired pizza oven if available. Dust pizza pan with cornmeal to prevent sticking. Add sauce and toppings of choice, then bake for 10-12 minutes until cheese is melted and crust is golden brown. Keep reading to learn about some of our favorite pizza topping and wine combos!
